I agree, the Ipod is the most popular mp3 player in japan, however some mobile phones will play mp3 players as well. A distant #2 would probably be the Sony mp3 player.
Totally agree with the two comments above. The mp3 player to have in Japan is the iPod as it is the coolest. Japanese manufacturers do in fact make some great mp3 players that have a good sized memory and are remarkably small. I highly recommend both Sony and Panasonic for these mp3 players.
